The night of the outbreak, Snow was home alone listening to music, surfing the Internet, watching her favorite anime, and sort of doing her homework like she promised her mother. Her parents were out for monthly date night, a tradition that parents and daughter had enjoyed since they decided Snow was old enough to stay home without supervision. At 14, it was about time!
It was weird when her mom called. Her mom couldn’t explain on the phone, but she sounded horrified, and was very clear—for whatever reason, that Snow had to leave town and go to her grandparents. She even said to take her car! That must have been serious.
Mom almost never used her car anymore, so Snow wasn’t surprised when it was low on gas. She went out to the shed where her dad kept extra gas cans for the lawnmower. Coming back to the garage, dark figures lunged at her from all directions!
Snow dropped the gas can and ran to the house. Several of those crazy people were already at the door… but her room’s window was open. She dodged a few hands, and started climbing the canopy. That’s when one got her—it clamped an icy death grip on her ankle. She kicked and kicked and finally pulled herself up, but now, terror held her as tightly as that… thing had.
She rushed to the window and felt a sharp pain slash across her calf. The pain made her fall through the glass into her room—blood everywhere. As she struggled to focus and call her friend, Hazel, she deeply hoped those things couldn’t climb…
